Important Steps in Meditation

Breathing - Balancing one’s breathing is an essential function of meditation. Breathing regularly through the nostrils and not attempting to control breathing, but rather letting it occur naturally and peacefully. Often times it may be difficult to avoid thinking about thoughts of the stresses of life, but it is vital to simply flush these thoughts out, focusing on clarity and breathing.

Posture - Maintaining an upright posture that is relaxed is essential in proper meditation. Many choose to utilize the Vairochana position while meditating, as is tradition. Making sure that your back is straight and yet not tense and the head is tipped slightly forward with the eyes peering downward are the essential steps to take in ensuring proper posture. Whether one chooses to sit cross legged, palm to palm with the hands is more a matter of personal preference. One’s shoulders should be relaxed, arms held slightly forward in a comfortable and relaxed position.

Relaxing the Mind - The first step in almost any mediation technique is to relax the mind and free you of the daily pressures and stress that inhibits you thoughts. To do this, it is important that you are in a relaxing environment, free from distractions and preferably rather quit. Silence your cell phone and leave it in the other room and set aside all other things during this time period. Because of the relaxing effect meditation provides, it is important to go into the process being as fully awake and alert as possible. Flush thoughts out and think of clarity and positivity. This will help to create a feeling of mental and emotional awareness.

Time - The time that one meditates may vary. When starting out, taking at least 15 minutes is a good idea as it can be rather difficult to get used to the meditation process and beginners tend to be less adept at letting go of the days concerns and achieving mental clarity. After a few weeks, on may choose to meditate longer or shorter depending on preference, however 15 minutes is usually a good time frame to stick with and use as a measuring tool for future advancement. The most important thing is that during this time, there are no distractions that interrupt meditation and finding out which 15 minutes during the day to ensure there are no distractions is essential in being successful in your meditation efforts.
